Prospective Teacher Information

The teaching staff of the ALC is made up of native speakers of English, as well as experienced Moroccan teachers. All teachers, regardless of nationality, hold university degrees and in most cases advanced degrees and/or certificates of training in Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

Who are we looking for?

A qualified applicant must have a Bachelor's or Master's degree from an accredited university. In addition, the ideal candidate should have:
• Experience in the teaching of English as a Foreign or Second Language (for native English speakers, at least one year of teaching overseas is strongly recommended).
• A certificate in TEFL or TESL.
• Some knowledge of French and/or Arabic.
• An interest in Moroccan or Middle Eastern Culture and/or the Arabic language (for non-Moroccans).
• Lastly, by Moroccan law, individuals 60 years of age or over cannot be issued work permits.
• For non-native speakers of English, native-like fluency and several years teaching experience is desirable.

Employment

Full time teachers usually have 18-24 contact hours per week during the main terms. Work is mainly English teaching in the classroom, but may include facilitating activities such as the ALC newsletter, the student drama club, or other extra-curriculular student activities. Most teaching takes place on weekday afternoons and evenings and on weekends. Teachers new to Morocco are asked to arrive in advance of the term with time to find housing and participate in orientation and training. All new teachers are required to attend the orientation program prior to their first term teaching. This year’s start date for new teachers from abroad is September 15, 2010.

Salary and Benefits

Full-time salaries offered by the ALC Rabat allow teachers to live comfortably in Rabat and are commensurate with experience. Salaries are in Moroccan dirhams, but foreign nationals may convert their earnings to foreign currency once they have been working in Morocco for 3 months. In addition to the basic salary, all teachers are offered medical insurance for a modest fee, which covers 80% of most medical and certain dental expenses. Other benefits include paid sick time (30 hours of sick pay per year), vacation pay, and free ongoing instruction in Moroccan Dialect, Standard Arabic, or French. Support for professional development is provided in the form of free training, regular workshops, and an all expenses paid trip to the annual All-ALC TEFL Conference. Finally, free internet/e-mail access, free access to our library, and a discount at the ALC Rabat bookstore are provided.
